The Anti-Corruption Bureau has scored number one, the Institutional Integrity Committee (IIC) for the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board as the top-performing parastatal which has implemented anti-corruption interventions that align with the National Anti-Corruption Strategy II.

In its Compliance Monitoring Report, the ACB says it conducted a monitoring exercise across all Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDA’s) to assess the operational effectiveness of the IICs.

Chair for HESLGB IIC, Mphatso Sandram said “We achieved a remarkable score of 95 percent, making us the most compliant IIC within the parastatal category”.

He further said that the HESLGB IIC is operational as it implements interventions in line with the National Anti-Corruption Strategy II. And apart from that, he said “our anti-corruption interventions are yielding success stories”.

Sandram said “The success stories include the development of the Fraud Prevention Policy, the Gift Policy, introduction of a dedicated email address for reporting corruption issues, orientating students on corruption issues in loan management and the introduction of boxes where members of staff can deposit any suspected corrupt activities.”

According to ACB, the exercise intended to assess progress made in the implementation of anti-corruption interventions.

The performance of IIC’s was based on the progress in implementing anti-corruption interventions per the National Anti-Corruption Strategy II and if the interventions were yielding any success stories.

The monitoring exercise will also help the ACB and the individual IIC’s to identify challenges and to come up with solutions that strengthen Institutional Integrity Committees

This exercise not only assists the ACB and individual IICs in identifying challenges but also facilitates the development of solutions to strengthen Institutional Integrity Committees.

Other top performers recognized include the Malawi Parliament, scoring 97% in the government Agency category, and Mzuzu City Council, achieving an 88% score in the Councils category.
